Description
Embroidery on digital photography printed on canvas.
Remember to Forget poignantly illustrates the relationship between a father and his son. The background features a landscape photographed at dawn during the artist's residency in Essaouira, Morocco, in 2023. In the center, a father and son dressed in traditional Ivorian boubous walk along a path leading to the beach, with the residence's fence and an ornate Arab door in the background.
The artist explores themes of the father-son relationship, family bonds, and intergenerational transmission. The golden crowns connecting the heads of the father and son symbolize this transmission of knowledge, both verbal and non-verbal, from generation to generation. The large circle surrounding the figures represents their intimacy and the deep bond that unites them.
The artwork encourages remembering the importance of forgetting grievances between family members and rekindling connections. It also reflects a personal dimension, evoking the artist's family history, and invites viewers to let go in order to reconnect with themselves and others by forgetting past divisions.
Presentation
Born in 1974, visual artist/photographer based in Abidjan, Ivory Coast. She studied graphic arts in Casablanca (Morocco) and worked as an art director in an advertising agency before starting her own photography.
She works mainly on conceptual portraits, mixed media and documentary photography. Much of her work focuses on Africa and what she learns from the myriad cultures that surround her. In her latest work, Choumali embroiders directly onto the images, completing the act of creating the photographic image with a slow, meditative gesture.
