Description
Au Bas Chic in Troyes, France.
A photograph that masterfully captures the essence of urban decay interwoven with a nostalgia for once-vibrant social hubs. The facade, painted in a palette of muted tones, whispers tales of yesteryears with its chipped plaster and faded signboard. An array of neatly arranged chairs and tables occupies the forefront, framing the scene with an inviting yet haunting beauty. The empty seating evokes a sense of abandonment, as if the venue, once bustling with chatter and laughter, now stands as a silent monument to lost times.
Above, a single window, partially curtained, hints at life beyond the deserted exterior, further deepening the viewer's curiosity and engagement. The adjacent buildings, equally weathered but each with their unique architectural quirks, contribute to Cawston's rich narrative. The interplay of light and shadow enhances the scene, casting a luminous glow on the pavement and drawing the eye to the subtle intricacies of the aged storefront.
In "Au Bas Chic," Caston has a compelling visual story that resonates with themes of time and memory. The juxtaposition of emptiness with the suggestion of past vibrancy invites viewers to contemplate the passage of time and the transient nature of social spaces. This evocative piece stands as a testament to the beauty found in the remnants of history and the quiet stories whispered by the urban landscape.
Presentation
Barry Cawston, born in London in 1966, is a British photographer renowned for his striking images that fuse architecture, landscapes, and portraits. A graduate in sociology from the University of Leeds, he studied photography at Kitson College in Leeds between 1989 and 1991. His work is distinguished by an almost painterly approach, where light, color, and texture reveal a unique visual poetry.
Cawston has won numerous awards, including the President's Award at the Royal West of England Academy's (RWA) Open Photography Exhibition. He has also exhibited at prestigious institutions such as the Marble Palace of the Russian Museum in St. Petersburg, the Völklinger Hütte in Germany, and the Oldenburg Museum. His major project, Threads, A Tale of Two Cities, compares the historic textile cities of Manchester and Kanpur, blending social documentary and architecture.
Based in Axbridge, Somerset, he runs the Drugstore Gallery with his partner Soraya Schofield. His photographic practice encompasses series such as Echoes from the Arboretum, Are We There Yet? (a trip to Banksy's Dismaland) and Russia: Far From Black and White, exploring the beauty of often-overlooked places with a cinematic quality.
