Description

This black-and-white photograph captures a moment of serene introspection. The subject, positioned on grass, exudes a natural grace, with one arm resting over her forehead. Her attire, an intricately embroidered dress, showcases traditional craftsmanship, contrasting vividly against the monochrome palette. The texture of the grass beneath her adds a tactile element, enhancing the scene's tranquil ambiance. Light gently highlights her facial features, evoking a sense of peaceful contemplation. The composition is expertly balanced, inviting viewers to ponder the interplay of light, texture, and human presence. The image's timeless quality and subtle emotional depth make it a captivating study of stillness and simplicity.

Matiz managed to create intimate portraits, in which Frida seemed happy to surrender to her lens. The result was dynamic portraits of Khalo, a wonderful example of both the photographer's skill and the artist's lively personality.

Leo Matiz is considered one of the tenth most influential photographers of the 20th century. His work as a photojournalist led him to travel extensively around the world, meeting and making friends with some of the most relevant figures of the 20th century.  Matiz was an artist who never waited for beauty to come looking for him. He looked for her with his camera, wherever she was, whether it was the face of a child lost on a city street, a landscape, architectural wonders or the now famous portraits of the legendary artist Frida Kahlo.

Presentation

Leo Matiz summarized his artistic pursuits by saying: “I am a painter because of activism, photographer because of hunger, and crazy because of talent.” Indeed, Matiz began his career as a caricaturist for political and literary publications, with a keen eye for gesture, features, and scathing humor. These illustrations were particularly influenced by the work of Gustave Doré, George Grosz, Nadar, and Guadalupe Posada. He later began working as a photojournalist in Mexico for a number of international publications, but began to use the medium to explore more artistic themes. His keenness for caricature served him well in his photographic portraiture, for which he is best recognized today. Matiz’s subjects included Frida Kahlo, Diego Rivera, David Alfaro Siqueiros, José Clemente Orozco, Marc Chagall, and Pablo Naruda.
