Description

The Polygon, Caracas, Venezuela by Leo Matiz

Image size: 13 in. H x 8.5 in. W Modern Selenium Toned Gelatin Silver Print

1950, re-printed in 1995 Signed, titled, dated in pencil on verso. Stamped.

This artwork presents a mesmerizing exploration of geometric recursion, capturing a series of diminishing frames that recede into an enigmatic darkness. Each frame is meticulously crafted, aligned perfectly to create an illusion of infinite depth, drawing the viewer's eye toward a vanishing point at the center. The stark contrast between the sharp, illuminated edges of the frames and the surrounding shadowy void enhances the hypnotic effect. The piece invites contemplation on themes of infinity, perception, and the passage of time. Its minimalist design is executed with precision, making it a striking example of contemporary art that bridges the gap between the tangible and the conceptual. The repetitive, rhythmic quality of the frames suggests a meditative, almost transcendental experience, encouraging introspection and exploration of the unknown.

Leo Matiz summarized his artistic pursuits by saying: “I am a painter because of activism, photographer because of hunger, and crazy because of talent.” Indeed, Matiz began his career as a caricaturist for political and literary publications, with a keen eye for gesture, features, and scathing humor. These illustrations were particularly influenced by the work of Gustave Doré, George Grosz, Nadar, and Guadalupe Posada. He later began working as a photojournalist in Mexico for a number of international publications, but began to use the medium to explore more artistic themes. His keenness for caricature served him well in his photographic portraiture, for which he is best recognized today. Matiz’s subjects included Frida Kahlo, Diego Rivera, David Alfaro Siqueiros, José Clemente Orozco, Marc Chagall, and Pablo Neruda.
