Familiar, 2026

Michaela Haider

This artwork captures a solitary figure nestled within a richly textured landscape of dense, verdant shrubs and subtle earthy tones. The dramatic cloud-filled sky above suggests an impending storm, casting a subdued light over the scene. The figure, partially obscured by the foliage, appears to be in a contemplative or restful pose, blending harmoniously into the natural surroundings. The use of contrasting elements—soft human form against the rugged terrain—creates a compelling dialogue between humanity and nature. The play of light and shadow adds depth, enhancing the emotional intensity of the composition. The artist's masterful blend of realism and subtle surrealism evokes a sense of mystery and introspection, inviting viewers to ponder the relationship between solitude and the natural world. This work stands out for its captivating ambience and its exploration of existential themes.

Starting with photographic base elements, such as the figure or the landscape, Haider transforms the scenery into a surreal world through heavy post-production. She uses photographs, that in their essence capture something real, to merge these aspects of reality, slowly creating something unreal and imagined, yet familiar in its story - a dreamscape, drawing from the essence underneath the surface. In her work the unspoken finds itself translated into images.
