Description

Rio Baile Funk #091, Rio de Janeiro 2014 Fine Art print on baryta paper, edition 2/8.

This dynamic artwork captures the raw energy of a sound system, with a young man poised atop a sprawling stack of towering speakers. Set in a dimly lit space, the scene conveys a sense of anticipation and vibrancy. The speakers, meticulously arranged in a grid, dominate the frame with their imposing presence, reflective of Funk carioca and Afro-Atlantic sound systems cultures. The man, dressed in casual shorts adorned with intricate patterns, embodies control and balance, his gaze focused and intent. The warm lighting casts dramatic shadows, highlighting the muscle tone and determination of the figure. The composition skillfully merges human form with the mechanical, celebrating the immersive power of music. This piece vividly portrays a moment poised on the brink of sound explosion, encapsulating the spirit and cultural richness of sound system traditions.

This photograph is part of the current exhibit - "Funk! Um grito de liberdade e ousadia", at the Museu da Lingua Portuguesa, São Paulo (until august 2026).

Vincent Rosenblatt, a Parisian, lives and works in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. He studied at the National School of Fine Arts (ENSBA) in the Atelier of Lesly Hamilton where he graduated in 2001. Rosenblatt moved to Rio de Janeiro and set up a photography workshop: 'Olhares do Morro' on the hills of the Santa Marta favela, providing a place where local youth could develop and study photography - from 2002 to 2008. While working as a photojournalist, Vincent documented the underground Baile Funk scene and fringe urban cultures in Brazil since 2005, when he began a collaboration with the Rio organizers of Baile Funk, dj's and dancers.
