Description
I wish to confront the documentary tradition of Western photography by creating work that merges the realistic with the abstract. By intentionally questioning my own artistic allegiance as well as that of the photographic genre, I strive to create images that offer new perspectives on familiar subject matter and engage the viewer in a dialogue about the subjective experience of the world that surrounds us.
Presentation
"Jacob Gils (b. 1963, Denmark) is a Copenhagen-based photographer known for his distinctive approach to capturing landscapes, architecture, and cityscapes through multiple exposures. His work explores the balance between structure and abstraction, inviting viewers into a layered visual experience where time and movement merge.
Gils graduated from The Copenhagen School of Photography in 1990 and his art has gained recognition in the form of prizes at the PRIX DE LA PHOTOGRAPHIE PARIS (PX3) in 2012 and 2015. He has exhibited in solo and group shows across the globe and his works are represented in the Danish Royal Collection, Nanjing Art Museum, China and at Maersk in Denmark as well as in private collections all over Europe, and in USA, Canada, Hong Kong, Singapore, China and Australia.
In his acclaimed Portraits of Trees series, Gils positions trees as powerful individual beings as well as symbols of resilience, fragility, and ecological urgency. The works reveal both the majesty and vulnerability of nature, subtly engaging with themes of climate change, environmental loss, and humankind's complex relationship to the natural world."
