Description
For more than five decades, Issei Suda photographed the margins of everyday Japan, the moments where the ordinary turns strange. His early work for Shūji Terayama's Tenjō Sajiki theatre and his landmark series Fushi Kaden (1971–77) established him as one of the defining voices of postwar Japanese photography. Throughout his career, he was drawn to masks, performers, dolls and the uncanny presence of the human figure.
Rei was among his last series. Suda made it quietly over several years in Ginza, where he photographed shop-window mannequins at daybreak, before the city woke. The series was first shown at Akio Nagasawa Gallery in Ginza in 2015 and published the same year as a signed and numbered book in an edition of 600.
The gallery presented it as Suda's most openly sensual work, in which mannequins stand for “the high-water mark of eroticism". In his afterword, Suda describes them rising “from the darkness with their perfect proportions" as dawn breaks, and calls them “a feast for the eyes".
Suda's work is held by the Tokyo Photographic Art Museum, the National Museum of Modern Art in Tokyo, the J. Paul Getty Museum, SFMOMA and the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, among others.
The work is coming with a certifcate of authenticity by Akio Nagasawa Gallery
