Description

From 'Belleza y Fantasia' series Archival Pigment Print Image size: 40 in. H x 60 in. W Edition of 9 + 2AP

This artwork presents a striking and thought-provoking exploration of the human form. The image displays a torso with precise, dotted lines outlining surgical markings. The symmetrical patterns emphasize the clinical aspects of body modification, reflecting societal pressures for physical perfection. The stark contrast between the skin and the dark lines enhances the visual impact, prompting the viewer to question the implications of cosmetic surgery. The artwork challenges conventional beauty standards, engaging the audience in a dialogue about self-image and identity. By focusing on the intimate and intricate details of the body, it evokes a sense of vulnerability and introspection. This piece stands out for its bold commentary on modern aesthetics and the lengths individuals go to in altering their natural form, making it both captivating and unsettling.

"In a few photographers like Mauricio Velez does aesthetic become ethic. Every portrait scene is seamless. Every composition is an impeccable piece: the light, gesture, even the preference of his subjects. Nothing can be discredited of the photographic style nor the clean technique. And for this aesthetic perfection, the message lands to the viewer in its pure state"

Presentation

Mauricio Velez was born and lives in Colombia. He was trained at the European Institute of Design in Italy. Since then, he has worked on a large number of projects in Latin America, the United States and Spain, offering, through his personal prism - images which he seeks to refine the sensitivity and perception of the viewer towards religious icons, art, and the human body.

His work confronts the viewer with a sense of aesthetics that balances between the spiritually inspired and the disturbed.

"In few photographers like Mauricio Velez does aesthetic become ethic. Every portrait scene is seamless. Every composition is an impeccable piece: the light, gesture, even the preference in models. Nothing can be discredited of the photographic style neither the clean technic. And for this aesthetic perfection, the message lends to the viewer in its pure state."
