Description
This artwork is a vibrant grid of 18 panels featuring abstract green and yellow humanoid figures against blue, purple, and red backgrounds. Each panel tells a unique story, with themes of technology, expression, and introspection. The figures engage in various activities, such as communicating through devices, contemplating under a glowing orb, and interacting with each other. The color transitions from cool blues to warm reds highlight an emotional journey, while simple lines emphasize the focus on mood and narrative over detail. Particularly striking is a sequence in the bottom row where a figure is both observed and painted by another, suggesting themes of self-perception and creation. The piece ultimately challenges viewers to question the intersection of identity, connection, and reality, compelling engagement through its bold color palette and minimalistic design.
Presentation
Jiayi is a Chinese artist born in 2000 based in London, specializing in experimental digital scanning as a medium. She studied at the London College of Communication (LCC) and the Royal College of Art (RCA), where her practice evolved to use scanning as a means to explore the sensory overlap between touch and vision under Asian LGBTQ context. By treating the scanner as an extension of the skin, Jiayi captures intimate, tactile traces that invite viewers to experience the lingering emotions of touch through visual distortion. Her work has been featured in group exhibitions, including a show at Tate Modern, highlighting her unique approach to digital media as a bridge between physical presence and emotional resonance.
