Description
Stamped signature, edition of 130 copies.
Yue Minjun's work revolves around his smiling self-image, a recurring motif in his oeuvre. The figures, all inspired by a generic self-portrait, each wear a radiant, foolish smile, a cynical grimace that conveys the artist's resignation and contempt for the materialism and spiritual emptiness of contemporary mainland Chinese culture. In "Hero Hero," Minjun depicts himself lying on rocks, laughing, a recurring motif in his work. Yue uses a minimalist palette to create a simple, even simplified, composition. The result is a bold and striking image. This stylistic technique is characteristic of Yue's work, and while possibly inspired by advertising and Pop Art, the imagery undeniably mocks communist painting and propaganda posters.
Presentation
Yue Minjun (born 1962) is a Chinese contemporary artist known for his distinctive style characterized by smiling self-portraits. Born in Daqing, Heilongjiang, China, Minjun studied oil painting at Hebei Normal University and later joined an art community in the 1990s. His works often depict himself and others wearing exaggerated grins, reflecting themes of individuality, irony, and social commentary.
Minjun's paintings became internationally recognized for their bold colors and humorous depiction of the human condition. His art has been exhibited in major galleries and museums worldwide, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the Ullens Center for Contemporary Art in Beijing. Minjun's work has had a significant impact on contemporary Chinese art and continues to inspire dialogue on identity and society.
