Okta is a work by Indonesian artist Roby Dwi Antono, one of the most prominent names in contemporary pop surrealism. His style is characterized by a fusion of classical painting traditions with a modern sensibility influenced by surrealism and lowbrow art. His characters, often children with large, expressive eyes, evoke a sense of nostalgia, mystery, and unease, exploring themes such as childhood, identity, and the duality between innocence and the unknown.
This particular piece, Okta, depicts a childlike figure with a penetrating gaze and a minimalist yet deeply meaningful composition. The work plays with the delicacy of the character's features and a soft color palette that enhances its dreamlike quality. Through his technique, Antono conveys great emotional depth in an apparently simple image, creating a dialogue between childhood's sweetness and an underlying sense of mystery.
Okta was released in 2022, and its distribution was marked by extremely high demand, selling out quickly after its launch. This success reinforces Roby Dwi Antono's position as one of the most influential emerging artists in contemporary art, with a growing market and an expanding base of collectors.
Presentation
Roby Dwi Antono, born in 1990, is a contemporary Indonesian artist. He is inspired by Mark Ryden, the founder of Pop Surrealism, and the iconic Japanese artist Yoshitomo Nara. By fusing the aesthetics of surrealism and classical Renaissance imagery in his own way, he produces a very distinctive contemporary art.
Antono's paintings typically depict children with enigmatic, glowing eyes and mythological creatures. There are also allusions to pop culture, such as the icons he admires, Jerry Lorenzo, Tyler The Creator and Takashi Murakami. Whatever the subject, Antono always aims to convey a message in his paintings, which all have a very personal signature.
