Description
Amoako Boafo's luminous portraits make and hold space for Black joy, subjectivity, and self-determination. The artist highlights his subjects' complexity with his own tender touch; he uses his fingers to paint their unique gazes, poses, and dress. Boafo was as an artist in residence at the Rubell Museum in 2019. The next year, he was featured in The Artsy Vanguard 2020 and the Artsy Editorial piece “The Most Influential Artists of 2020" after he made an astounding secondary-market debut: His stylish portrait (2019) sold for £675,000 ($875,000) at Phillips London. His work has since sold for more than $1 million and been acquired for the collections of the Guggenheim Museum, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, and the Albertina Museum.
Presentation
Born in 1984 in Accra, Ghana, Amoako Boafo is renowned for his representation of black bodies, and his intriguing technique of finger painting. The Ghanaian artist studies at the Academy of Fine Arts, Vienna, and in 2017 was awarded the the prestigious Walter Koschatzky Art Prize. Since then he has gone on to exhibit at the Leopold Museum in Vienna, LACMA (Los Angeles) and the Guggenheim in New York.
His work is striking, and typically consists of powerful portraits, full of emotion and feeling. Amoako often utilizes a monotone color palette, isolating his subjects, placing the focus on the raw emotion of the work, or of his muse.
