Description

A rare and impressive work, intaglio with colour etching on Lavis Fidelis En Tout Cas paper, by the celebrated American artist Robert Rauschenberg.

Hand-signed and dated in pencil (Rauschenberg '99) along the lower margin.

From an edition of only 46 - numbered in pencil along the lower margin

Created in 1999, this work belongs to the highly acclaimed portfolio Ruminations, one of the artist's most personal and introspective graphic series.

The work is titled Big and Little Bully's, and is generally believed to refer to the artist's parents. As with many of Rauschenberg's works, the title remains deliberately open to interpretation. It suggests the complexity of family relationships while leaving room for the viewer's own reading of the image.

With dimensions of approximately 117 × 147 cm, this work is the largest print from the nine-print Ruminations portfolio.

Created between 1999 and 2000, the Ruminations series reflects Rauschenberg's personal memories and experiences. Instead of focusing on public subjects, he turned to his own photographic archive. Early family photographs, images of close friends, newspaper fragments and layered textures come together in complex yet remarkably intimate compositions.

The series includes references to many people who played an important role in Rauschenberg's life, including Jasper Johns, Cy Twombly, Merce Cunningham, John Cage, Ileana Sonnabend, Tatyana Grosman, as well as members of his own family.

The series Ruminations was printed and published by Universal Limited Art Editions (ULAE), New York, one of the world's leading fine art print studios. The publisher's embossed blindstamp appears in the sheet.

The series can be seen as a small, personal retrospective. This extraordinary work is an outstanding opportunity to acquire an important museum-quality work by one of America's greatest post-war artists.

Robert Rauschenberg (1925–2008) is regarded as one of the most influential artists of the twentieth century. By combining painting, photography, printmaking and collage, he transformed the language of contemporary art.

His works are represented in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Guggenheim Museum, Tate Modern and the Centre Pompidou, among many others.
