Moonlight Neighbor - Totoro, 2026

Sometimes a night of rain is all it takes for childhood to return knocking at the door. With Moonlight Neighbor, I immerse myself in the imagination of My Neighbor Totoro: the bus stop, the incessant rain, the shadow of the forest, and that massive, calm, and almost unreal presence that transforms an ordinary scene into a collective memory. Here, the red of the umbrella cuts through an almost entirely black and white universe, like a signal in the middle of the night. Totoro becomes at once a companion, a protective spirit, and a familiar silhouette that is recognized before even needing to be named.
I chose to confront this softness with a rawer writing: large white gestures close to calligraphy, traces, projections, vertical lines of rain, and textures that borrow from both street art and Japanese aesthetics. The result is not a reproduction of a cult image, but a contemporary reinterpretation of a piece of popular memory.
Moonlight Neighbor plays precisely on this contrast: innocence against black, the warmth of a memory against a more radical composition, popular culture treated as artistic material. A piece designed for those who have never truly left this forest and who know that a simple umbrella in the rain can be enough to bring a whole world back up.
