Description
An original print by Antoni Clavé (1913-2005), issued in an edition of one hundred and seventy copies. Clavé left Barcelona in 1939 among the defeated Republicans and settled in France, where he built one of the most substantial careers of any Spanish artist of his generation, working first as an illustrator and stage designer and later developing a heavily material abstraction in which collage, imprinted textures and metallic pigments produce surfaces close to relief. His printmaking, pursued with the leading Paris workshops, is inseparable from that pursuit: the plate is treated less as a matrix for drawing than as a surface to be worked, torn, embossed and inked so that the sheet retains the physical incident of the studio. The large format, 65.5 by 50 centimetres, is consistent with the ample sheets he favoured from the 1960s onward. Clavé represented Spain at the Venice Biennale in 1984 and his work is held by the Museo Reina Sofía and the Centre Pompidou.
Presentation
His work began into a baroque style with violent chromaticism. Time after, his artwork began to simplificate and it became completely abstract in his last years. In 1978, National Modern Art Museum in Paris (now George Pompidou Centre) organised his first retrospective, which made the artist be the most renowned of his generation.
In 1984, Spain brought him to the Venice Biennale and he was awarded with the gold medal by Cataluña Generalitat. His work has been exhibited all around the world: Bilbao Fine Art Museum, Picasso Museum in Antibes or Tate Gallery.
