Description
Untitled II, a colour lithograph of 2018 by Luis Feito (Madrid, 1929-2021), 30 by 22 cm, in an edition of sixty. It is one of a numbered group of small lithographs of that year, of which sheet XII is also held here with identical dimensions and edition size. Feito's practice of numbering rather than naming his works was a considered position: the refusal of a title removes any invitation to read the image as a depiction and returns attention to the material facts of surface, colour and mark. A founder of El Paso and one of the Spanish artists most fully integrated into the Paris art world of the nineteen-sixties, he sustained an informalist language of black, white and incandescent colour throughout an unusually long career. These late sheets are modest in scale but continue that vocabulary without dilution.
Presentation
Painter, one of El Paso group founders. He studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando, in Madrid. Awarded with Official Award of Arts and Lettres in France in 1985. Gold Medal in Fine Arts in 1998. Member of Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando.
His first paintings are figurative, but later he experimented with Cubism to finally reach the Abstraction. He only used black, white and ochre colours at the beginning. However, when he discovered the potential of the light y tried bright colours and plain surfaces. He used more and more vivid colours with time.
He has made exhibitions in the most relevant cities in the world, his artwork can be seen in important collections and museums, such as Fine Art Museum in Montreal, Guggenheim Foundation in New York, Modern Art Museum in Mexico DF, National Museum of Modern Art in Paris, or Reina Sofía Museum in Madrid.
