Description
"At the beginning of the 2000s, Claude Gilli had chosen to return to his favorite work, cut wood, to bring to life his pleasure of coloring feelings and memories. It was during this period that he produced a series of pieces in homage to love, to life, to its pleasure of surprising us ... "

(Michel Roudillon, Press kit for the POP LOVE exhibition, the fires of love, LOFT gallery, Feb. 2018)

A universal symbol of life and the feeling of love in the popular imagination, the heart possesses a unique visual and emotional force. In the series of "Fires of Love", CLAUDE GILLI presents it in the form of relief compositions, shiny and smooth, in intense colors. Word games, games of light, games of setting in abyss. Lively and vibrant, his cut out hearts induce a notion of depth of pictorial space, reinforced by the light of the flames that come to caress them. In Mad Love, hearts multiply and ignite, proving to us once again, that despite the hardships he had to face all his life, Gilli never ceased to create with a certain magic in an undying quest for 'an ideal of happiness.

Flagship artist of the School of Nice, CLAUDE GILLI (1938-2015) significantly contributed to the affirmation of French pop art. Born in Nice, he trained in Decorative Arts in the city. Close to the artists Albert Chubac, Martial Raysse, Ben but also Arman, César, Farhi and Venet, he produced several works of "white food" with Robert Malaval. In 1966 he won the Lefranc Prize and took part in the exhibition "12 super realists" in Venice (Del Leone gallery) where he discovered the work of American "pop" artists. In 1968 he worked on plexiglass before making a series of paintings "with snails".
In the 1970s he moved to Paris and participated in numerous exhibitions, including one dedicated to the School of Nice at the Center Pompidou. The degenerative disease from which he suffers eventually catches up with him and forces him to use a wheelchair. He then began to develop work on cut iron, carrying out projects for outdoor pieces and monumental sculptures.

Presentation

One of the prominent exponents of the Ecole de Nice and considered to be the only real French pop artist along with Martial Raysse. He was born in Nice on September 15, 1938. He attended the school of decorative arts in the city, where he met the same Raysse. In 1958 with the latter and Albert Chubac, he was part of a collective exhibition the "Laboratoire 32", at the gallery of Ben Vautier.

In the 1960s, Gilli collaborated with the creation of the Nouveau Réalisme movement as one of the most active exponents. In recent years, he has developed the first set of relief panels, made of carved wood (with the blessing of Arman, giving him an electric saw) and dominated by blue color.

His dedication to art is such that in the New Year's Eve of 1962, he burned almost everything he had produced so far. In the following years, even under the influence of American Pop Art, his subjects abandoned the frame, with the first "collate”, a middleway between sculpture and painting. His constant search will lead him to experiment at first with the abandonment of color, with "phantom" plates made of transparent plexiglass, and finally the use of snail shells for the creation of sculptures.

He died in June 2015: his work is set to become a variegated artistic work, emerges from the figure of an artist who, in the historical context of Nouveau Réalisme and Pop Art, maintains his authenticity in Nice.
