Presentation
Casper Versluis is a South African sculptor born in 1983 who lives and works in Johannesburg, South Africa. His steel creations emphasize the beauty of simplicity.
Having traveled extensively across the African continent, Casper's designs are inspired by the diversity of culture and its artistic expressions. The African land and its people were his upbringing, so he strives to express the intricacies of what it means to be a human being. Her main favorite subject is the human figure and its various stages of body language expression and relational interaction.
His works are deliberately designed to spark intrigue and provoke audience engagement. The primary method of design is based on stereometric construction by realizing form through the description of space rather than mass. This introduces a degree of lightness to the sculpture that can often be considered heavy in the solid state.
Casper also expresses a strong influence of Cubism by deconstructing objects and emphasizing key facets and planes. It highlights unusual aspects of the work such as angles, surfaces, planes, corners, curves, colors and dimensions.
The interplay of light and shadow emphasizes the strength of the design, the fluidity of the design demonstrates movement and dynamism that purposely evokes emotional engagement. His choice to design works of art around a base of outlines, insinuations and suggestions also serves to help express many of the vulnerabilities of the human element that he seeks to present.
All his works of art are made from low carbon steel through a process of cutting, forging, welding, chemical treatments and concrete casting.
