In this body of work, the traditional board game pawn, a symbol of strategy, control and sometimes sacrifice, becomes much more than a simple game piece.
Measuring 35cm tall and made of acrylic glass, these pawns transcend their usual context, inviting viewers to consider their place in the larger game of life.
The transparency and bright colours evoke a sense of play, but they contrast sharply with the deeper underlying theme: are we all pawns in a great invisible game? How much control do we really have over the roles we play in life, and to what extent are we influenced by outside forces?
At this magnified scale, the pawns, once passive figures, now demand our attention. They become surrogates for the human condition, challenging notions of agency, choice, and societal or invisible “hands" that shape our paths. The choice of transparent, modern materials suggests both the transparency and complexity of these forces in our contemporary world.
By presenting these pawns as bold, transparent objects, the work challenges viewers to consider their own role in the larger game of existence, blurring the boundaries between player and piece.

Originally from Rotterdam, Michaël Van Craelingen draws inspiration from an eclectic mix of creative influences rooted in his background in industrial and product design. His artistic journey began with shaping functional objects and then evolved into an exploration in the field of contemporary art.
This experience in industrial design has allowed him to acquire a deep understanding of form, function and aesthetics. His paintings, sculptures and installations reflect a quest for the essence of form, color and material, often with a minimalist and welcoming approach.
His work is characterized by his fascination with the quest to reveal beauty in simplicity.
