Geoide #2. From The Geoide Series, 2019

Fredy Saul Serrano

The artwork is a three-state model of an inorganic body, beginning with a black, alien-like rock formation, which gradually unfolds as it evolves, revealing its contents as a whitish crystal with unknown properties.

Serrano's artistic work centers on an interest in exploring his territory and its representation. In recent years, he has focused on the natural sciences as an object of study for his research and creation, seeking to establish connections between remembered events and other fictions in his imagination. This line of work emerges from the investigations he has conducted in a territory called Laguna, whose meaning expands into synonyms and/or other definitions of the word—for example, when speaking of a "mental gap"—which are translated into the visual metaphors of this place, constructed from childhood memories.

This intriguing artwork presents a striking interplay between organic and geometric forms, encased in a clear glass dome. At its center, a smooth, white, conical structure contrasts markedly with the rugged, textured black base beneath it. The base, resembling volcanic rock, is adorned with intricate beadwork patterns, adding depth and complexity. The seamless melding of natural and meticulously crafted elements is accentuated by the glass dome, which elevates the piece to a position of reverence, inviting contemplation. Mounted on a simple wooden platform, the overall composition combines raw nature with refined artistry, making it a compelling study of contrasts. This piece evokes themes of preservation and the delicate balance between nature and human intervention, urging viewers to reflect on the interconnectedness of these realms.
