Description
Donald Sultan, 2015, painted aluminum on polished aluminum base, 62 × 61 × 7.6 cm (24.4 × 24 × 3 in). Engraved on the reverse with the title, date, and artist's initials. Edition of 25.
“Blue Poppies" is a painted aluminum sculpture on a polished aluminum base, from Sultan's renowned “Flowers" series. The artist is recognized for reviving the tradition of still life painting, where the image is deconstructed down to its fundamental elements. His work thus remains both abstract and figurative. Sultan revisited and reinvented the still life with images of lemons, poppies, playing cards, fruit, flowers, and other objects. Interested in contrasts, he explored dichotomies such as beauty and roughness, nature and artificiality, realism and abstraction. His flower bouquets, fruit still lifes, and landscapes fill the space with impressive monumentality.
Presentation
Donald Sultan is an acclaimed American artist known for his distinctive large-scale paintings and prints. Born in 1951 in Asheville, North Carolina, Sultan received his art education at the University of North Carolina and the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. His work often combines elements of still life, abstraction, and minimalism, featuring iconic subjects such as flowers, fruits, and industrial objects. Sultan's art is characterized by bold, graphic forms rendered with a rich and tactile quality. He employs a unique technique that involves layering industrial materials such as tar and vinyl, resulting in textured and sculptural surfaces.
