"The diptych of the wounded cherry tree consists of the two halves of the same log, split in the heart.
I immediately wanted these two elements to form a single work, that they could be arranged in various configurations without calling into question their relationship.
So I simply rotated the two halves around each other to consider the ways they might face one another. And I worked on the surfaces, matching each time a concave curve of one element to a convex curve of the other, thinking of the dance of two bodies turning around each other, undulating in parallel. I made an exception for the relatively flat, split face, which corresponds to the center of the original log, and which, for me, contains all the tension due to the imposed separation of the two halves. This diptych has no prescribed arrangement; it can be staged at any point in the dance.
This wooden sculpture embodies a captivating harmony between nature and art. The two slender, elegant forms seem to converse, evoking a fluid and organic connection. Each hand-carved piece reveals meticulously sculpted details, a testament to artisanal mastery. The rough texture contrasts with the smooth curves, adding a tactile dimension to the visual experience. The use of raw wood lends a natural warmth, paying homage to the living material. Variations in color and grain enrich the work, creating a captivating visual dynamism. These elements give the piece a unique depth and soul, inviting the viewer to reflect on the symbiosis between humankind and nature. This bold piece commands attention while maintaining a discreet elegance, symbolizing the timeless beauty of natural materials.
Christine Houssay was born and grew up in Lorraine, a country that no longer exists. Currently, she lives and works in Paris and the Drôme.
She has always drawn and "tinkered", made silver photos from the age of 13, enamels on copper, sewing, calligraphy, oil painting, weaving on a loom she designed and made.
She has spent her life exploring her own identity: "to see elsewhere if I am there" (without necessarily moving around much in space) - "not to stay as soon as I learn nothing more". Around the age of 30, long before the existence of the Internet, she discovered silkscreen printing, printing as a multiple imprint "in the service of beauty, to be made available to the greatest number" and made printing her profession.
Later, when this profession was too much colonized by the computer, which made direct contact between humans and with matter useless, she discovered lithography and for 16 years made it her preferred mode of expression. She plans to take over an old linotype, in order to create a lithography and typography workshop for bibliophily publishing (this intention will come up against competition from better supported museum projects).
Since then, she has been practicing lithography, silkscreen printing, wood engraving, drawing, photography, painting, installations, and even performance; and for several years now, mainly wood sculpture.
