Description
This artwork features an intriguing resin sculpture within a transparent rectangular block. Inside, a miniature scene unfolds, where a solitary figure raises its hand toward a towering abstract form, evoking a sense of yearning or communication. The base is textured with earthy tones, simulating a rugged terrain, while vertical streaks descend from above, suggesting rain or motion. The interplay between the figure and the form creates a narrative of aspiration or connection, enhanced by the clarity of the resin that distorts and magnifies, adding a dynamic element. The artist skillfully balances minimalism and depth, crafting a piece that invites contemplation on human experience and interaction with the unknown. The composition's simplicity belies its emotional depth and interpretative richness, making it a distinctive and evocative work.
Presentation
Oliver Czarnetta, born in 1966 in Birkesdorf near Düren, Germany, is a contemporary sculptor who lives and works in Aachen. After completing his apprenticeship as a stonemason in 1992, he began working as an independent artist, grounding his practice in traditional craftsmanship and material knowledge.
From 1993 to 2004, Czarnetta studied Art History and Philosophy at RWTH Aachen University, where he later earned a PhD (Dr. phil.) with a dissertation on neo-Gothic stone sculptures at Aachen Cathedral. This academic background continues to inform his artistic approach, combining conceptual depth with technical precision. Between 2007 and 2010, he worked as an artistic staff member at the Institute of Art History and Theory at the University of Koblenz, further expanding his engagement with art theory and research. From 2012 to 2015, he maintained an additional studio in Leipzig, broadening his artistic network and practice.
Czarnetta’s work reflects a unique synthesis of intellectual inquiry and sculptural tradition, positioning him as a distinctive voice in contemporary stone sculpture.
