Description
This evocative artwork features a distinctive glass cube encapsulating a surreal scene that melds the tactile and the ethereal. At its heart floats a shiny gear, partially submerged in a gritty landscape reminiscent of eroded sands. Above, a suspended sphere, marked with a golden human figure, introduces a mystical element, suggesting themes of time, motion, and existential reflection. The juxtaposition of the mechanical and the organic within a clear, cubic boundary creates a striking contrast, engaging viewers with its interplay of light and shadow. This piece not only showcases the artist's innovative blending of industrial and natural motifs but also invites contemplation on humanity's place within time's relentless passage. The work's minimalistic yet profound composition challenges traditional perceptions, making it both a visual and philosophical exploration.
Presentation
Oliver Czarnetta, born in 1966 in Birkesdorf near Düren, Germany, is a contemporary sculptor who lives and works in Aachen. After completing his apprenticeship as a stonemason in 1992, he began working as an independent artist, grounding his practice in traditional craftsmanship and material knowledge.
From 1993 to 2004, Czarnetta studied Art History and Philosophy at RWTH Aachen University, where he later earned a PhD (Dr. phil.) with a dissertation on neo-Gothic stone sculptures at Aachen Cathedral. This academic background continues to inform his artistic approach, combining conceptual depth with technical precision. Between 2007 and 2010, he worked as an artistic staff member at the Institute of Art History and Theory at the University of Koblenz, further expanding his engagement with art theory and research. From 2012 to 2015, he maintained an additional studio in Leipzig, broadening his artistic network and practice.
Czarnetta’s work reflects a unique synthesis of intellectual inquiry and sculptural tradition, positioning him as a distinctive voice in contemporary stone sculpture.
