Description
Art is established here in a setting of wood and paper. This wall sculpture plays with scales and perspectives.
A miniature figurine stands alone facing a monumental portrait. The character seems frozen in a moment of astonishment.
The dialogue is established between the minuscule world and a classic image. This staging questions our relationship to the image and the digital.
The aesthetic is sober. The white space accentuates the contrast with the golden frame and the precise details of the assembly.
The work is inspired by object boxes and a narrative approach. Each element is arranged with millimeter precision to create a visual story.
The entire piece is protected by an anti-reflective glass. This piece, made in 2020, is part of a series of limited editions handcrafted.
Presentation
Gaspard Mitz is a Parisian mixed-media artist born in 1981.
Inspired by 1/87 scale model figurines, Gaspard Mitz created his first narrative box in December 2010 as a gift to his girlfriend. In his Box Stories, he sets up miniature characters in bigger-than-life scenarios. He shapes tailor-made destinies for his figurines, enjoys making references to the History of Art and tries to make people smile.
He has always been keen on jewel cases-objects, such as music boxes, cuckoo clocks and artist Joseph Cornell's artworks. Being a great admirer of Japanese aestheticism, he sets up his scenes in sober, uncluttered atmospheres, and works with selected materials: wood, foam board and paper.
Box Stories are limited-edition pieces handcrafted by Gaspard Mitz in Paris. They are showcased within a wooden box with anti-reflective glass. Each piece is signed, titled, numbered and dated on the back, and has a hook hanging system.
Box Stories are exhibited in concept stores, galleries and contemporary art fairs in France and abroad.
