Description
The interplay between the exterior and interior form assumes a dominant role in this work in basswood. The inner space, whilst stretching towards the edges of the outer perimeter also "hugs" the material in a rounding motion, which both blurs the lines between inner and outer surface and unites the piece in its convex curvature.
The forms, developed on paper, are inspired by non-dual ideas like Love and Oneness. I gain such inspiration mainly through metaphysical study, observation in presence and contemplative inquiry.
When sketching this form, I recall wondering how far I could stretch the inner contour, and then adjusting the curves in proportional accordance with the whole piece. I never know when I will discover a form that "clicks". I explore, "mold" (through sketches), modify and develop ideas—refining this part and that part—and when it so happens, a potent design ends up presenting itself.
After drawing the front view onto the wood block, the inner opening was drilled into before proceeding to remove the bulk of the material with a keyhole saw, gouges and a mallet. When determining the depth of and spacing between the two footings, it was necessary to imagine the overall curvature of the whole form (since all parts are related). Rasps and knives were also used in the process before arriving at the final shape and proceeding to sanding the form smooth.
The title Non-Referential Movement No.2 refers to the beauty of motion in its essence, before thoughts of measurement, comparison or relativity enter the scene.
I hope this freestanding piece, with its elegant balance, will find a place in a chosen interior where it will inspire and interest.
Wood Form #335

Presentation
Upon completion of an honours degree in Design from York University / Sheridan College in 2005, Mike lived in Japan to deepen his studies of the unique culture. After his return to Canada, the deeply imprinted memories of the Japanese gardens, architecture and arts began to emerge through his woodcraft and visual arts. The wood sculptures Mike has been carving since 2017—inspired by yoga, modern art and metaphysical philosophy—have been well received from the beginning of their career and have continued to mutate and evolve ever since. The work has been shown in YVR International Airport; at Ki Gallery in Cully, Switzerland; Craft Council of British Columbia; and Dalbergia: Fine Wood & Objects; and is on permanent display on the Ritz-Carlton Super Yacht Evrima, in Infinity House in Boca Raton - Florida, and in the lobby of Suncadia Resort in Washington.
