Description

This sculpture explores memory and identity through a conceptual approach. The artist uses metal to create a dense and repetitive framework. The work resembles an industrial weaving, evoking the structure of a rug.
The assembly of crossed metal threads forms a textured and dark surface. This rigid network suggests the notions of boundary and confinement.
The choice of materials recalls the creator's personal history and their connection to craftsmanship. Each intersection of metal becomes the symbol of a collective experience marked by exile.
The composition plays on transparency and superposition. Light passes through the mesh, creating a subtle play of shadows on the support.
This piece is part of a political reflection on displacement and freedom. The raw aspect of the metal emphasizes resistance and perseverance.
The precise execution transforms a cold material into a complex visual narrative. The assembly presents itself as a rectangle with irregular edges.

Presentation

Abdul Rahman Katanani is a Palestinian Lebanese multidisciplinary artist whose practice explores displacement, memory, freedom, and the experience of life in refugee communities. Working across sculpture, installation, painting, assemblage, and graffiti, he transforms everyday and discarded materials into expressive works that reflect on Palestinian identity and the experience of exile. Corrugated metal, wire, clothing, kitchen objects, and other familiar materials become important elements in his work, carrying personal and collective memories of displacement.

Born in 1983 in Sabra Refugee Camp in Beirut, Katanani studied Fine Arts at the Lebanese University, graduating in 2007, and later completed a Master of Fine Arts in 2012. As a third-generation Palestinian refugee whose family originates from Jaffa, his personal and family history has strongly influenced his artistic practice. His early experience working with his father, a carpenter, also shaped his interest in materials and construction. Katanani has exhibited extensively in Lebanon, Europe, and the Arab world, and currently lives and works in Beirut.and remembrance.
