Description
The balance is played here between geometric rigor and organic fluidity. This abstract sculpture relies on a play of striking contrasts. A wooden support, worked with precision, structures the composition. The deep black creates a dark setting. It highlights the irregular silhouette of a central mass.
The gleam of the gold leaf captures the light. This precious material brings a luminous and solar dimension to the whole. The relief varies, alternating between flat surfaces and jagged contours. The assembly evokes a precious fragment, a mineral trace frozen in time.
The dialogue is established between the natural warmth of the wood and the graphic coldness of the black. Each right angle responds to an unpredictable curve. This piece plays with depth and shadows. The technique combines the solidity of carpentry with the delicacy of gilding. The object presents itself as an architectural object reduced to the essential. This organized composition ends with two side extensions in light wood.
Presentation
Attracted since always by contrasts and oppositions, particularly by the dialogue between shadow and light, Sylvain Meyrieu develops an artistic approach based on the search for balance between darkness and brilliance, matter and light.
His first explorations are directed towards black and white photography and charcoal drawing, two practices that feed his sensitivity to nuances, textures, and plays of contrast.
The artist decides to dedicate himself fully to his artistic research. A trip to Japan, marked by the discovery of lacquer art, constitutes a determining step in his journey. He then chooses lacquer and gold leaf as main mediums, associating the depth of lacquered surfaces with the precious luminosity of metal.
In 2026, Sylvain Meyrieu undertakes two series titled "The Illuminated" and "Fragments". Designed as the elements of a coherent whole, his creations are thought to dialogue with each other, to respond to each other and complete each other, inviting the viewer to a sensitive and progressive reading of his universe.
This same year marks his first public exhibitions. He participates in the exhibition Cours et Jardins des Arts, in Vers-Pont-du-Gard, in July 2026, where he receives the Swixim prize, accompanied by an exhibition planned for November.
He is also selected for Nimagine 2026, in the section .
Through his work, Sylvain Meyrieu explores the relationships between shadow and light, seeking to bring a singular visual harmony to their oppositions, where matter becomes the support of a reflection on perception and light.
