Estética africana

¿Cómo se puede definir la estética africana? Un continente formado por 54 países -cada uno con su propia cultura, sus propias tradiciones y sus propias estructuras sociales- produce sin duda artistas africanos estilísticamente variados. 

El movimiento literario Négritude, liderado por los escritores Aimé Césaire, Léon Damas y Léopold Sédar Senghor, desempeñó un papel fundamental en el desarrollo del arte africano moderno. Fundado en 1937 por un grupo de estudiantes artistas africanos en París, una ciudad con una escena artística tolerante y diversa, el movimiento creció a nivel mundial. El movimiento pretendía criticar el colonialismo y cultivar el aprecio por la cultura negra y africana, cuyos efectos, sin duda, son imprescindibles en la escena artística africana contemporánea. 

Según Léopold Sédar Senghor, para que el arte africano progresara debía reflejar la modernidad del presente respondiendo a los problemas sociales y estilos artísticos contemporáneos, al tiempo que celebraba la cultura tradicional. Inspirándose también en otros movimientos modernistas como el Renacimiento de Harlem y el Surrealismo, la estética africana de las artes visuales se centra en estos principios y hoy la transmiten artistas como Angu Walters, que se centra en la vida cotidiana de los pueblos africanos. Por su parte,  Faie Davis trata de utilizar su objetivo para captar el aprecio por los que conservan la tradición.
