Biographie
Leo Matiz a résumé ses activités artistiques en disant: «Je suis peintre à cause de l'activisme, photographe à cause de la faim et fou à cause du talent.» En effet, Matiz a commencé sa carrière comme caricaturiste pour des publications politiques et littéraires, avec un sens aigu du geste, des traits et de l'humour cinglant. Ces illustrations ont été particulièrement influencées par le travail de Gustave Doré, George Grosz, Nadar et Guadalupe Posada. Il a ensuite commencé à travailler comme photojournaliste au Mexique pour un certain nombre de publications internationales, mais a commencé à utiliser ce médium pour explorer des thèmes plus artistiques. Son goût pour la caricature lui a bien servi dans son portrait photographique, pour lequel il est le mieux reconnu aujourd'hui. Les sujets de Matiz comprenaient Frida Kahlo, Diego Rivera, David Alfaro Siqueiros, José Clemente Orozco, Marc Chagall et Pablo Naruda.
