Photographie Fantastique
Photography is often associated with the real and the plausible. However, there is a photographic genre that moves away from this idea, exploring themes of the supernatural, myths, and legends: fantastic photography. Whether you are a fan of Tolkien-esque universes or simply looking to venture into a new visual genre, you will surely be captivated by the works in this selection. Mystical landscapes, plays of light and shadow, enchanting colors—discover images that blur the line between the real and the unreal.
The theme of the fantastic quickly gained traction in cinema and literature, but its success in photography came later, as photography was traditionally appreciated for its documentary and realistic qualities. In contrast to the photographer's desire to capture the "decisive moment," by the 1960s, photographers began embracing the imaginary, the unreal, the fairy-tale, the marvelous, and the invisible. The fantastic appeals with both its monstrous and cruel aspects as well as its magical and naïve qualities. Artists have specialized in this genre, including Jérôme Bosch, Cindy Sherman, Pierre et Gilles, Sarah Moon, Grégory Crewdson, Deborah Hally, Jeff Bark, Desirée Dolton, Erwin Olaf, Bronek Kozka, and Vivien Racault.
Explore this genre and immerse yourself in the enchanting world of fantastic photography, where reality fades into the imaginative and the surreal.
