Description
Driven by winds, currents or tides, having spent days, weeks, months or even years in salt water, each piece of wood he picks up is immediately imprinted in his memory, the artist calmly admits.
Once collected, the driftwood pieces are laid flat on the floor in a room for two or three weeks to dry thoroughly. Then comes the time for creation in the workshop where Marc Bourlier has set up a workbench. On his work surface are the indispensable drill, a jigsaw, chisels, a collection of Opinel knives of various sizes, wood glue, and spools of linen twine. A dialogue then begins between him and his driftwood. Three small holes, the tip of a nose, and the face comes to life. He can shorten the piece, thin it out, but over time, he has learned to intervene as little as possible. Observe them closely; they all seem to be the same color… Not at all! From gray to light beige to deep black, all the colors of life permeate his characters. At first, he added arms, genitals, a little hair, and he quickly realized that it was merely anecdotal and therefore uninteresting.
