Asger Jorn - Original Gouache 1972

This powerful gouache on paper is a striking example of Asger Jorns late-period expressionism, created circa 1972. Executed in deep black brushstrokes with energetic, near-calligraphic gestures, the composition vibrates with raw spontaneity and abstract vitality. Areas of white and subtle cream underpainting provide rhythmic balance, while a gestural cluster at the center suggests human or animal form emerging from chaos

The authenticity and dating of this piece have been formally confirmed and registered by the Asger Jorn Archive at the Museum Jorn in Silkeborg, Denmark, the institution that holds the world s most comprehensive collection of the artists work.

Stamped by the Asger Jorn Estate and Asger Jorn Colombes on the reverse.

Asger Jorn settled in Colombes, a suburb just northwest of Paris, in 1969. There he built a personal atelier-house on rue Saint Denis, which remained his creative base until 1972. Works issuing from this Parisian studio often bear the Asger Jorn Colombes estate stamp, certifying their origin and registration in the Museum Jorn archive.

This powerful work stands as a rare and museum-worthy example of Jorns post-CoBrA practice, blending abstraction with unconscious figuration, and is a vital piece for collectors of European post-war avant-garde.

Presentation

Asger Jorn, born Asger Oluf Jørgensen on March 3, 1914 in Vejrum in Central Jutland and died on May 1, 1973 in Aarhus, is a Danish painter. He was one of the founders of the CoBrA movement and of the Situationist International. In 1936, Asger Jorn arrived in Paris to join the Contemporary Academy of Fernand Léger. There he meets the French Pierre Wemaëre with whom he binds a deep friendship.

During the Nazi occupation of Denmark, Jorn was an active communist in the resistance and participated in the artistic group Høst. He was one of the founders of the CoBrA movement in 1948. The same year he joined the Dutch artist group Experimentele Groep in Holland founded by Karel Appel, Constant Nieuwenhuys, Corneille, Theo Wolvecamp, Anton Rooskens Jan Nieuwenhuys and many Dutch artists.

He merged the International Movement for an Imaginist Bauhaus, which he had founded in 1955, the Lettrist International and the London Psychogeographical Committee, into a single unified movement: the Situationist International in 1957.

In 1961, he left the SI to found the Scandinavian Institute of Comparative Vandalism (see La Langue verte et la Cuite, with Noël Arnaud, which earned him the title of Commander Exquis of the Order of the Great Gidouille).
