“Dollar Shirts" – An iconic assemblage by Jan Henderikse
Mixed media / Artistic design
Folded (origami) one-dollar bills and graphite on paper
Unique work – signed by the artist in pencil
"Dollar Shirts" is an emblematic work by Jan Henderikse, a central figure in the Nul movement and a pioneer of contemporary assemblage. True to his historical approach, the artist transforms everyday objects—two one-dollar bills—into veritable origami micro-sculptures through a subtle folding technique. The bills become miniature t-shirts, affixed to graphite-etched paper, in a minimalist and instantly recognizable composition.
This piece is perfectly typical of Henderikse's practice: the use of non-artistic materials, conceptual humor, the repurposing of ordinary objects, and reflection on value. Each element expresses his ongoing exploration of accumulation, assemblage, and the blurring of lines between art and reality.
A rare, unique, refined work that condenses the entire spirit of Jan Henderikse into an intimate yet powerful format.
Origin: Gallery of the Four Columns
EXHIBITION: "POP POWER"

Jan Henderikse is an eclectic artist, involved in assemblages, installations and limited editions. The originality of his works can be found in his method: he uses whatever materials, like industrial products and discarded materials, and produces serial composition that depicts reality avoiding any personal handwriting or personal touch. Similar to the manufactory process within factories, his art emphasizes impersonality. This original sculpture, Nul, is a white neon tube sculpture. To realize this sculpture, Henderikse wrote on a sheet of paper several times the words "Nul" and "NUL", the translation of ZERO in Dutch. Through a glass blower and neon technician, he translated then his design in a high-impact sculpture.
