"Together Gathered" by French artist Natalya Mougenot is a contemporary abstract figurative painting exploring human connection and the sincere bonds that define our emotional lives in an increasingly digitalized society.
Part of Mougenot's ongoing series on human presence, Together Gathered depicts four women with abstract faces, each figure distinct yet harmoniously intertwined. The painting reflects her exploration of intimacy, trust, and authenticity — the invisible threads linking people beyond social roles or performative behavior. “In a world where we are asked to play many roles," she explains, “finding a true, sincere connection is rare. I paint to capture that essence — what remains when we strip away pretense."
The composition is built through vibrant, luminous color fields —vivid reds blues, greens, expressing both emotional energy and the subtle dynamics of interpersonal bonds.
For Mougenot, color is more than visual ornamentation: “Color is how I speak. Bright tones carry energy, hope, and a sense of vitality. I want viewers to feel the connection, not just see it." The bold yet fluid contours of the figures evoke movement and interaction, while the abstract treatment emphasizes emotional resonance over physical likeness.
Her process is entirely intuitive and spontaneous. Mougenot rejects strict planning or preliminary sketches, letting the work emerge organically.
“If I try to control it too much, the truth disappears. Authenticity lives in gesture, in immediacy," she says. This approach ensures each interaction between the figures retains a natural, lived-in honesty — a visual meditation on vulnerability, empathy, and the shared human experience.
Influences from Van Gogh, Cézanne, and Matisse inform her expressive chromatic choices and structural sensibility, yet Mougenot's voice remains unmistakably her own.
"Together Gathered" is not merely a painting of faces; it is an exploration of the inner spectrum of connection, revealing the hidden threads that link us and reminding viewers of the profound significance of authentic human presence in a world often dominated by performance and digital facades.

Natalya is a contemporary french artist living in Lyon.
She was born and grew up in Kazakhstan, the country known for its spacious steppes.
She arrived in France 2003. Since that moment she loves her adoptive country.
She started painting in 2017 and used it as a therapeutic and emotional release during times of crisis. She incorporates this therapeutic approach in her artistic creative process till now.
In her artistic practice she refers to the terms of metamodernism, which proposes to look at the world from the position of the inner adult.
As an artist and as a woman she translates the experience of her personal search for balance based on harmony between mind, soul and body. This balance, in her opinion, is the pillar for the inner adult.
Important components of her work are authenticity, soulfulness, sincerity, emotionality and honesty. She immerses the objects and the characters in the world where there is no falsity, rudeness, loneliness and indifference.
She works rapidly and is constantly sensitive to the details.
Her artistic process is a fine balance between a pre-meditation and spontantainty which helps her to create her expressive atmospheric artworks with a modern touch of impressionism by cultivating a naive art approach.
