Menashe Kadishman: The Flock

Tel Aviv From November 10, 2026 to January 31, 2027

Presentation

From 1978 until the end of his life, the sheep was Menashe Kadishman's signature. This solo exhibition brings together paintings and limited edition prints from across his career: sheep heads in bold, expressive colour, grazing flocks in open landscapes, horses, and a tender Bride and Groom.

Kadishman (1932-2015) was born in Tel Aviv and worked as a shepherd on Kibbutz Ma'ayan Baruch in the early 1950s, an experience that stayed with him for the rest of his life. After years in London, where he made his name as a sculptor, he returned to Israel and to the animal he knew best. In 1978 he represented Israel at the Venice Biennale with a flock of live sheep, their backs painted blue, and in 1995 he was awarded the Israel Prize for sculpture.

From 1995 he painted sheep portraits by the hundreds, and they are never just animals. Painted boldly, with thick brushstrokes and intense colour, each head has its own expression and personality. For many collectors, they have become a symbol of Israeli art itself.

Square Art Gallery has a long personal history with the artist. For many years, the gallery worked directly with Kadishman himself, and today it works closely with his estate and family. Every painting in this exhibition comes with a certificate of authenticity from the artist's estate, signed by his children.

The exhibition is presented online on Artsper and at our gallery at 15 Carlebach Street, Tel Aviv.
