Presentation

Chinese sculptor born in 1956 in China at Qingdao, Shandong Province. In 1980, Sui Jianguo entered the Shandong Academy of Arts, specializing in sculpture. From 1986 to 1989 he studied at the Central Academy of Fine Arts, Beijing, China.

He currently lives in China in Beijing where he is still professor at the Central Academy of Fine Arts. He is the Director of the sculpture department of the Academy of Fine Arts, and it is thanks to Sui Jianguo that abstract and conceptual sculpture have been accepted by the Chinese authorities. Beyond the borders of China, he is probably one of the most promising sculptors of the XXI century.

By sculpting his jacket like the one of Mao Zedong, he wants to associate each compatriot in his introspective approach. This jacket desired by Sun Yat-sen in 1911 and worn by millions of people in China symbolizes the paternity of a period that marked a generation, an extraordinarily powerful cultural symbol.

More recently his red dinosaur 2002 (symbol of imperial China as Communist China) has engraved on its chest Made in China, a nod to plastic toys from the beginning of China's economic boom, this time a symbol of a millennial China awakening to the contemporary realities.
