Sylvia Pires Da Rocha began her practice with film photography, developing a keen sensitivity to light, framing and composition — requirements that continue to guide her work today.
Before dedicating herself fully to earthenware, she worked for several years as a research engineer, exploring experiential learning. This scientific approach strengthened her methodology and now informs her way of exploring the intersections between media and subjects, through experimentation and the fusion of disciplines.
Today, in her studio in Nantes, she explores the tradition of painting on earthenware tiles with her own recipes for oxide washes. She pushes the boundaries of this practice and questions its place in space, paying particular attention to fragments of stories, partial visions, incomplete memories, and landscapes perceived in flashes.
