Presentation

Carlo Amen is a young visual artist and tattoo artist. Born in northern France in 1985, he grew up surrounded by two artistic parents in a house where there was paint on every door handle. It was here that he developed his appetite for the artistic world.

After graduating from the Saint-Luc School of Visual Arts in Tournais, Belgium, Carlo Amen began his long journey of initiation. He left for Spain, then returned to Belgium for a short while, before heading to Europe's roads and further afield, to Great Britain, the United States, Thailand, Mexico, Tasmania and Australia. Over 10 years, he lived in 5 different countries and travelled through more than 25, before acquiring his unique style, which he likes to describe as "neo-classical with cubist inspirations".

An avid globe-trotter, he finally settled in Paris, where he opened a tattoo parlour, 'Les Maux Bleus', with a friend and colleague. Like his tattoos, his paintings are simple and naïve. He finds inspiration in everyday life; in metro parishioners, gourmet cooking, spiral staircases, trampolines, people who give bread to Parisian pigeons, music from the 80s, the creativity that can be observed in contemporary dance and the kitsch of dog beauty competitions, not to mention travelling.

Many of his illustrations are a nod to the Spanish master Pablo Picasso. His approach to cubism is also a way to pay tribute to the great men of the previous century such as Henri Matisse and Auguste Herbin or the paintings of Le Corbusier.
