Ian Shevack

Ian Shevack (1982) is a Berlin-based artist. For over 17 years, Ian has developed anrefound his technique, Klecksography, which uses inkblots to create art. Ian´s practice is unconventional: he paints raw and unstretched canvas on the floor. This allows him to move freely on the canvas while stretching, folding, dripping, and gushing Japanese ink. 

His work is completed within the viewer's imagination, inspired by abstract ink forms and vivid color fields. Ian's art emancipates viewers from what the artist wants them to see to focusing on what they actually perceive. Ian started his career in Los Angeles with an art collective named 'F.A.M' and continued painting in Berlin. He is known for his pioneering contribution to the Solar Art Panel Series, collaborating with Olafur Eliasson. Currently, he is a resident at the Starke Stiftung and represented by Not A Gallery Berlin, Germany and KAMILĖ GALLERY in Perth, Australia. 

The series “What do You see" uses ambiguous visual language to assess the human psyche subconsciously. The inherent power of counter compositions was often used in Renaissance art as it's been broadly explored in Leonardo Da Vinci's paintings. Ian, however, indicates tension within the abstract and often accidental ink shapes spreading over layers of colors. Contemplative movement and quick foldings drives the creative process reflecting the artist's innermost feelings of the moment. 

In the early 20th Century, the Swiss psychologist Hermann Rorschach popularized the inkblot test, considering its projective significance in psychoanalyzes. For Ian, the creation of the series 'What do You see' is an investigation of two significant counter notions: order and disorder. The artist invites the viewer to take on a journey of their own subconscious and turn the visual information into a somatic experience of pareidolia (a tendency to impose a meaning on a visual where there is none).
