German artists

Janaina Tschäpe was born in 1973 in Munich, Germany. She lives and works in New York and Rio de Janeiro.

She received her bachelor of Fine Arts from the Hochschule für bildende Künste, Hamburg and her Master in Fine Arts from the School of Visual Arts, New York.

Her works are part of many prestigious collections: Centre Pompidou, Paris ; Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York ; Museo Nacional Reina Sofia, Madrid ; Museu de Arte Moderna do Rio de Janeiro ; Moderna Museet, Stockholm ; Thyssen-Bornemisza Art Contemporary, Wien.

For over twenty years, Janaina Tschäpe has been developing a poetics of organic forms, through an artistic practice that includes painting, sculpture, drawing, photography, video and installation. She conceives dreamlike landscapes – loosely inspired by South American fauna and flora – which progressively grow into true ecosystems where life develops and blossoms in vibrant and shimmering light. The artist describes the world in a singular language, in which feeling supplants understanding. Whatever is the medium, Janaina Tschäpe invents lush and floating universes in which terrestrial, aquatic and celestial beings coexist, and creates thus her own personal mythology.
