Etel Adnan (born February 24, 1925) was a Lebanese-American artist, poet, and essayist. Born in Beirut, Lebanon, Adnan studied philosophy at the Sorbonne in Paris and later pursued a career as a writer. In the 1960s, she began painting and quickly gained recognition for her vibrant and abstract landscapes.
Adnan's paintings often incorporated bold, expressive brushstrokes and a vivid color palette influenced by her experiences of nature and the landscapes of her native Lebanon. Her works reflect a deep connection to place and an exploration of memory and identity.
Adnan's art has been exhibited in prominent galleries and museums worldwide, including the Serpentine Galleries in London and the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Throughout her career, she has received numerous awards and honors for her artistic and literary contributions, solidifying her status as a highly influential figure in contemporary art and literature. Adnan died in November 2021, in Paris.
