The paintings of
Sander Reijgers was born in 1977 in Alphen aan de Rijn, the Netherlands, and graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the Utrecht School of Art in 2006. In 2014, he earned his teaching degree in visual arts. In addition to his work as a freelance artist, he teaches visual education at a secondary school.
Sander Reijgers' paintings are the result of long, layered processes in which time becomes tangible. Over the years, the artist has worked on the same surface—without a pre-established plan—allowing each brushstroke, each trace of paint, and each painterly gesture to accumulate within the increasingly dense skin of the work. What emerges is not the image of a moment, but an accumulation of presence—a painted diary.
The studio becomes a space of continuous notation: impulses are recorded, layered, revisited, and recontextualized. In this practice, painting is not merely a medium, but an archive—bearing traces, memories, and rhythms of work. Gradually, the paintings evolve into sculptural objects in which the past is materially inscribed.
Rather than offering linear narratives or figurative representations, Sander Reijgers' works present a concentrated form of storing time. What we see is not what happened, but the fact that something happened—and that it left a trace. In this sense, the works are not representations, but residues of a prolonged physical and mental presence.
