Kalle Nilsson

Sweden • 1974

Light, silence, and the feeling of the Swedish west coast, captured in watercolour.

Biography

Kalle Nilsson (b. Gothenburg) picked up a brush for the first time in 2019, drawn to watercolour the way his father before him had been. What started as a way to switch off from a demanding career as a school principal became something far more serious. Within a few years he had moved from private experiment to sold-out solo exhibitions at Galleri Scandinavia in Gothenburg and Marstrand.

His subject matter is often Bohuslän. The rocky archipelago of the Swedish west coast where he has spent every summer of his life. Cliffs, open water, fog, the particular quality of evening light as it turns hard shadows soft. Nilsson works in layers, building depth through extreme contrasts of light and dark, letting water and pigment find their own logic on the paper. The results carry a stillness that feels both specific to place and entirely universal.

Represented by Galleri Scandinavia since the gallery introduced him as a new voice in contemporary Swedish watercolour painting.
