Description

A winter dusk settles over Käringön, one of the outermost islands of the Bohuslän archipelago on Sweden's west coast. The sky ignites in deep orange and crimson, pressing down over a cluster of snow-covered houses along the quay. A single lit window breaks the cold silence of the buildings, the only sign of life against the burning sky.

Nilsson works the contrast hard here. The warmth of the horizon pushes against the cool, almost colourless architecture, and the fire above finds its echo in the dark water below. The scale is ambitious: at 165 × 115 cm, the painting commands space. Watercolour at this size is technically demanding, and Nilsson uses the medium's transparency to keep the transitions in the sky luminous rather than heavy. The result is a landscape that feels both utterly specific to place and charged with something larger, the kind of Nordic light that is as much an emotion as a meteorological event.

Presentation

Kalle Nilsson (b. Gothenburg) picked up a brush for the first time in 2019, drawn to watercolour the way his father before him had been. What started as a way to switch off from a demanding career as a school principal became something far more serious. Within a few years he had moved from private experiment to sold-out solo exhibitions at Galleri Scandinavia in Gothenburg and Marstrand.

His subject matter is often Bohuslän. The rocky archipelago of the Swedish west coast where he has spent every summer of his life. Cliffs, open water, fog, the particular quality of evening light as it turns hard shadows soft. Nilsson works in layers, building depth through extreme contrasts of light and dark, letting water and pigment find their own logic on the paper. The results carry a stillness that feels both specific to place and entirely universal.

Represented by Galleri Scandinavia since the gallery introduced him as a new voice in contemporary Swedish watercolour painting.
