Description
A winter stillness settles over the Bohuslän coast. A row of red wooden buildings stands low against the land, their forms softened by snow and held beneath a sky that shifts in muted tones of ochre and grey.
The light is restrained but present, catching on the facades and the edges of the roofs. A few windows glow faintly, introducing a quiet warmth within an otherwise subdued palette. The foreground remains sparse, the ground and water nearly merging in a flat, silent plane.
Nilsson holds the composition tightly. The buildings stretch horizontally, anchoring the image, while the sky opens above with a soft, grainy texture that keeps the atmosphere alive. The contrast is subtle but deliberate, warmth against cold, structure against openness.
He returns often to this coastline, working from a landscape he knows deeply. In watercolour, he allows the pigment to settle into the paper, letting the material itself shape the surface and tone.
The result is a scene that feels grounded and unforced. A quiet observation of place, where the simplicity of the motif carries the weight of something more enduring.
Presentation
Kalle Nilsson (b. Gothenburg) picked up a brush for the first time in 2019, drawn to watercolour the way his father before him had been. What started as a way to switch off from a demanding career as a school principal became something far more serious. Within a few years he had moved from private experiment to sold-out solo exhibitions at Galleri Scandinavia in Gothenburg and Marstrand.
His subject matter is often Bohuslän. The rocky archipelago of the Swedish west coast where he has spent every summer of his life. Cliffs, open water, fog, the particular quality of evening light as it turns hard shadows soft. Nilsson works in layers, building depth through extreme contrasts of light and dark, letting water and pigment find their own logic on the paper. The results carry a stillness that feels both specific to place and entirely universal.
Represented by Galleri Scandinavia since the gallery introduced him as a new voice in contemporary Swedish watercolour painting.
