Description
A low winter light settles over the shoreline, where a row of worn wooden boats rests in the shallows beside a small, weathered hut. The sky opens in a soft gradient, shifting from pale warmth near the horizon into a deep, heavy blue that presses down over the scene.
The light comes from behind, almost dissolving the horizon line. It spreads across the water and ground, catching in small details while leaving the foreground in shadow. The boats sit quietly, dark and grounded, forming a steady line against the shifting sky.
Nilsson works the contrast with restraint here. The brightness of the horizon pushes against the weight of the foreground, while the transition in the sky remains soft and luminous. The composition holds a sense of stillness, but never becomes static.
He returns often to the Bohuslän coast, working from a landscape shaped by memory and repetition. In watercolour, he uses the medium's transparency to build light from within the paper, allowing the atmosphere to stay open and breathing.
The result is a scene that feels both immediate and distant. A quiet moment, held between light and shadow, where the presence of the boats and the hut anchors something otherwise fleeting.
Presentation
Kalle Nilsson (b. Gothenburg) picked up a brush for the first time in 2019, drawn to watercolour the way his father before him had been. What started as a way to switch off from a demanding career as a school principal became something far more serious. Within a few years he had moved from private experiment to sold-out solo exhibitions at Galleri Scandinavia in Gothenburg and Marstrand.
His subject matter is often Bohuslän. The rocky archipelago of the Swedish west coast where he has spent every summer of his life. Cliffs, open water, fog, the particular quality of evening light as it turns hard shadows soft. Nilsson works in layers, building depth through extreme contrasts of light and dark, letting water and pigment find their own logic on the paper. The results carry a stillness that feels both specific to place and entirely universal.
Represented by Galleri Scandinavia since the gallery introduced him as a new voice in contemporary Swedish watercolour painting.
