Description
A winter dusk settles over Grynge fiskeläge, where a row of low buildings stretches along the shoreline under a sky that burns in deep orange and red. The light gathers at the horizon, held beneath a darker, heavier sky that presses down over the scene.
The ground is covered in snow, open and undisturbed apart from faint traces that lead through the space. The buildings sit quietly within it, simple in form, their muted tones absorbing the last of the light. No movement, just the stillness of a place at the edge of day.
Nilsson keeps the composition direct. The warmth of the horizon pushes against the cold, pale foreground, while the line of buildings creates a steady rhythm across the image. The contrast is clear but controlled, nothing exaggerated.
He returns often to these coastal environments, working from a landscape shaped by familiarity. In watercolour, he lets the light come through the paper, keeping the surface open and the atmosphere intact.
The result is a scene that feels both grounded and distant. A quiet stretch of coastline where the intensity of the sky carries the image, and everything else recedes into silence.
Presentation
Kalle Nilsson (b. Gothenburg) picked up a brush for the first time in 2019, drawn to watercolour the way his father before him had been. What started as a way to switch off from a demanding career as a school principal became something far more serious. Within a few years he had moved from private experiment to sold-out solo exhibitions at Galleri Scandinavia in Gothenburg and Marstrand.
His subject matter is often Bohuslän. The rocky archipelago of the Swedish west coast where he has spent every summer of his life. Cliffs, open water, fog, the particular quality of evening light as it turns hard shadows soft. Nilsson works in layers, building depth through extreme contrasts of light and dark, letting water and pigment find their own logic on the paper. The results carry a stillness that feels both specific to place and entirely universal.
Represented by Galleri Scandinavia since the gallery introduced him as a new voice in contemporary Swedish watercolour painting.
