Biography

Sam Gilliam was an esteemed American artist known for his innovative approach to abstract painting. He was born on November 30, 1933, in Tupelo, Mississippi. Gilliam's artistic journey began in the 1960s when he moved to Washington, D.C., and became associated with the Washington Color School, a group of artists exploring color field painting.

Gilliam's breakthrough came in the late 1960s when he began experimenting with a unique technique of draping and suspending his canvases, freeing them from traditional stretcher bars. These vibrant, draped canvases became his signature style, blurring the boundaries between painting and sculpture. Through his use of color, form, and movement, Gilliam created immersive and dynamic art experiences.

His groundbreaking contributions to the art world have been widely recognized and celebrated. Gilliam's artworks have been exhibited in prominent museums and galleries worldwide, solidifying his position as a significant figure in contemporary art. He died in Washington in June, 2022.
